All river trips are suitable for novices and usually start from Burnage Rugby Football Club (BRFC). ..other starting points can be arranged.
The river is mainly flat water with a good current to take you down, every now and then a small riffle will add a little excitement to the journey.
BRFC to Northenden
Spend the 15 mins at the top of the river familiarizing yourself with the canoe and then canoe down to Northenden, going under the Wilmslow Road Bridge, skirting along past the Galleon Hotel and on under the A34 and then round the big meander past Fletcher Moss then on to Northenden. Get out just above the weir or in the right conditions enjoy the thrill of shooting the weir. About one and a half hours on the water.
BRFC to 'Jackson's Boat' Pub
As above but then canoe on (there is a good portage point to miss Northenden Weir) down round another big horse shoe bend between Northenden and West Didsbury and then past Chorlton Water Park and on to Jakson's Boat. Approximately two and a half hours down from BRFC.
Jackson's Boat is located 12km from BRFC and serves hot and cold food all day with a wide choice of good quality beer, wine and soft drinks. www.jacksonsboat.co.uk
BRFC to Trafford Metrovick Rugby Football Cricket Club
Canoe on from Jackson's Boat Pub another 40 mins and you will arrive at Trafford Metrovick where there are changing facilities before a return trip back to the start. This will be about 3 hours and a most enjoyable trip taking in all the variety of the Mersey.
Trafford Metrovick - Carrington Recreation Ground
An alternative to starting at Burnage Rugby Club (particularly if you are living in the Sale area) could be the paddle of the last section from Sale down to Carrington - once past the weir at Ashton Mersey (which must be portaged) the natural meanders of the Mersey await for the next couple of hours.
FULL DAY TRIP
Canoe the whole length of the ' River Mersey Canoe Trail ' and travel all the way down from BRFC to Carrington, once past the weir at Ashton Mersey the river is left unchannelised and reverts to its natural meanders.
Come and hire a canoe or be guided down the Mersey with family, friends or colleagues.
